When talking about concrete in the construction world, we often make the mistake of confusing it with cement, these elements is different and has a specific function.
To differentiate some terms from others it is necessary to start with cement, a key material in the construction of buildings and bridges. The best known is Portland, and in fact the vast majority of construction companies use it since its qualities are the best. If sand is added to the cement, the result obtained is called mortar, a material that is very versatile in construction. Depending on the way the concrete is made, we can use it for light constructions or for more robust buildings. Finally, if we add stone to the mix of cement and sand, we will obtain concrete, a much stronger material than those mentioned above. If we also add an iron structure, we will be talking about reinforced concrete.
The importance of concrete lies in its easy malleability, which allows it to adapt to a multitude of different types of construction. In addition, it is fire resistant and very economical, which makes it the most valued material in the world of construction. Concrete is also resistant to freezing and water, which together with its low cost makes it an ideal element for making pavement, a product that requires huge amounts of raw material. It is also used in channels and dams for its resistance to inclement weather and for the flexibility of the resulting material, previously mentioned.
The wear resistance of concrete is what makes it a leading product in the sector since it is not affected by high temperatures, heavy rain, cold or hail. This results in it being used in all parts of the world, something unusual in the world of construction since most materials vary substantially depending on the part of the globe in which they are to be used. Finally, it should be noted that concrete has replaced other materials that were depleting our natural resources, so its appearance was a revolution in the world of construction but also excellent news for our planet. It must be borne in mind that the manufacture of buildings, bridges or dams is the basis of the current world since industrialization has advanced by leaps and bounds in all countries. For this reason, if instead of concrete, whose raw material is practically inexhaustible, we had made use of a scarcer one, the current circumstances would be much worse and human beings would be considerably affected by it.
